The big picture: Prosecutors and Trump's team have sparred over the timing of the classified documents case, and on Thursday both parties filed briefs making their case for their preferred start date.

  • Trump's team argued that the trial should be postponed until after the 2024 election, but proposed Aug. 12 as an alternative.

Between the lines: Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, had indicated before the Friday hearing that she may allow "reasonable adjustments" to the current timing of the classified documents case, which is scheduled to begin May 20.

The 2020 election cases in Georgia and D.C. are currently on ice.

House passes bills to avert a government shutdown; package now heads to the Senate

  The House of Representatives passed the remaining six appropriations bills for fiscal year 2024 on Friday morning, setting up a tight turnaround for the Senate to vote on the package before a midnight deadline to avoid a partial government shutdown. The vote could have consequences for House Speaker Mike Johnson. GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia  filed a motion to remove him as Speaker . The  $1.2 trillion package  includes defense, homeland security, financial services and general government, labor-HHS, the legislative branch, and state-foreign operations. It funds the federal government until the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30. The bills needed two-thirds support to pass. The final vote was: 286-134.
